Product review: “FODMAPPED for you” Low FODMAP Breakfast Biscuits

5 reasons why we loved the Low FODMAP Breakfast Biscuits by “FODMAPPED for you”
28 May 2018

One of The FODMAP Talk’s all-time popular posts is the launch of “FODMAPPED for you” Low FODMAP Breakfast Biscuits (read here and here). A few months ago, the FODMAP focused Australian company revealed they plan to introduce a brand-new product: Low FODMAP Certified Breakfast Biscuit in two flavours. The news gained a lot of attention worldwide on our social platforms. (Not there yet? Join the conversation! We are on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter).

According to “FODMAPPED for you”, the Australian company is “the first brand to provide a complete solution to low FODMAP cooking and convenience meals”. In addition, they are “the first FODMAP Friendly dedicated brand to launch anywhere in the world”.

All of “FODMAPPED for you” products are suitable to consume as part of the FODMAP Diet. The Low FODMAP Diet aims to reduce and manage symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).  According to estimations, 1 in 7 people suffer from IBS worldwide. IBS symptoms include abdominal bloating or pain, excess wind, nausea, diarrhoea and constipation (or a combination of both). According to research, the FODMAP Diet, which was created by Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, can help 75% of IBS patients. That is 3 of 4 people who suffer from IBS!  In fact, the FODMAP Diet is recognised internationally by leading medical professionals as the best dietary treatment for the management of symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

The new products, just like all the rest of “FODMAPPED for you” products, are Low FODMAP Certified by “FODMAP Friendly”. The FODMAP Friendly certification is applied to products that are scientifically tested to be low in FODMAPs. The FODMAP Friendly Food Program is the only registered Certification Trademark worldwide, certifying the FODMAP levels in packaged foods. It was co-founded by Dr Sue Shepherd, one of the world’s FODMAP experts.

Dr Shepherd,  an Advanced Accredited Practicing Dietitian, is in fact one of the co-founders of the FODMAP Diet. The FODMAP Diet was initiated in 2005 by Dr. Shepherd and Prof. Peter Gibson from the Department of Gastroenterology at Monash University.

Both Dr. Shepherd and Prof. Gibson made history and created a real solution for a medical issue that doesn’t have a proven pharmacological remedy. One can only wonder whether both of them could even imagine that less than 15 years after their amazing revelation they will help millions of patients and create a worldwide phenomenon.

“FODMAP Friendly” were kind enough to send us a sample of the new product: “FODMAPPED for you Breakfast Biscuits 4 Grain Cranberry, Orange + Vanilla Bean”.

The tag line of the product is “delicious snack when you are in a hurry”. Each package includes 5 packs of 2 biscuits. The Low FODMAP serving size is 2 biscuits (meaning the Low FODMAP Certification by FODMAP Friendly refers to eating 2 biscuits at a time. Eating more than that will be considered High FODMAP).

Executive summary: the biscuits are delicious, but don’t expect to be full.

5 reasons why we liked “FODMAPPED for you Breakfast Biscuits 4 Grain Cranberry, Orange + Vanilla Bean”:

1. It’s delicious.
Very simply put, the product is very tasty. The first ingredient on the list is butter, and most definitely you can taste a lovely buttery touch. You can visibly see some cranberries in the product, but not much. As per orange – I couldn’t really taste any orange in the product (maybe that's a good thing...), however I could feel some hints of vanilla. Overall, it’s very delicious and pleasant.

2. Size.
The product is good-sized; it’s not too big and not too small. Two biscuits are 22g and it seems like the right size when you want a quick snack to have with your coffee on the go. I didn’t feel too full or heavy after eating them, which is important when you have IBS.

3.  Convenience.
It’s very easy to pop a packet or two in your handbag for a quick snack or just for those “hangry” moments (hungry + angry… who is with me on that one?!).
It’s nice to have it for breakfast as it's sweet (but not too sweet), and can be very useful also for those 3pm moments or just when you need something to hit the spot.

4. Source of fiber.
Look, I wouldn’t call this product super healthy (it received only 2 out of 5 health star rating), but it contains grains and some fiber. According to the packet the product has grains like quinoa, amaranth, corn and rice. Personally, I wouldn’t eat it every single day, but as a quick and easy on the go solution (or for those “hangry” moments) – it’s great.

5. Supporting an all-FODMAP company.
I have no commercial connections with “FODMAPPED for you”, this is purely my opinion. I like to support companies that decided to dedicate their business to FODMAP. I have a lot of respect for “FODMAPPED for you” for identifying the commercial opportunity in the FODMAP Diet and hence creating good Low FODMAP Certified products, which are sold not only in Australia but also in other parts of the world.

It is also worth mentioning that the “FODMAPPED for you Breakfast Biscuits 4 Grain Cranberry, Orange + Vanilla Bean” are gluten-free, vegetarian and nut free. 2 biscuits are just 94 calories.

In summary:

The Low FODMAP Breakfast Biscuits are very tasty. They are fun to have with you in your handbag, at home or in your office. They also go great with coffee, tea or hot chocolate. However, it is not a meal replacement so don’t expect to get too full. They will keep you going for a while – with no IBS reactions.
